2022 Gene Fox Memorial Improv Workshops

-----------------------------------------------

When Gene Fox passed away, the Friends received generous memorial gifts from has friends and family, who during his lifetime was a great supporter of the Friends and the Library, and a beloved English teacher at Northfield High School.  Those who knew Gene called him “a great wit” with a love of humor and comedy, and special commitment to education at all levels.

What better way to honor Gene Fox than with a series of workshops in comedy?

The improv workshops originally planned for January have been re-scheduled to fit into one week this August:  August 15-20, 2022

  • Adults of all ages, four sessions:  Mon, Tue, Thurs and Fri, 4:00 – 7:00 pm
  • Teens entering grades 9-12, four sessions:  Mon, Tue, Thurs and Fri, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm  (This session cancelled; interested teens may select either adult or youth sessions).
  • Youth entering grades 6-8, one session:  Sat, 2:00 – 5:00 pm

Combined performance on Saturday, August 20, 7:00 pm

Interested?  Register now.

There is no cost to participants, thanks to a generous memorial donation from friends and family of Gene Fox.

Workshops will focus on the fundamentals of improv:  listening, agreement and trust.  Using a variety of exercises, you’ll practice relating to your scene partners and adding specifics.  They will conclude with a short show that’s a mix of games and short scenes on August 20 (7:00 pm at the Arts Guild Theater).

Meet our instructor, Deon Haider.

Deon Haider, a seasoned improv actor, will lead the workshops and provide direction for the performance.  Deon grew up in Northfield and participated in many Northfield Arts Guild shows as a performer, director, and designer.  Deon has been studying and performing improv for nearly 10 years. She trained at HUGE Theater in Minneapolis, and is an active member of the Twin Cities improv community. Currently, Deon performs with the groups Crossworlds, The Latest Night, and Tracktastic. Deon holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Theatre Arts, and has a special passion for education. She has taught and directed kids and adults of all ages in both scripted and unscripted theater. She also works as a community health educator with the University of Minnesota Extension.

Note:  Audience capacity for the August 20 performance has not been determined – more information will be provided closer to that date.  An additional performance may be added on Sunday, August 21 if needed.
